We begin by defining a random sample and explaining how a random sample is also considered a collection of independent and identically distributed random variables. To do so, the idea of mutually independent is also defined. The concept is illustrated by finding the joint PMFs and joint PDFs of random samples from discrete and from continuous populations. The concept of a finite population is introduced, as is the idea of a bootstrap sample.
