Enumerating outcomes in the sample space of an experiment, or in an event in the Borel field on the sample space, is the first step in computing the probability of an event.  In this section, we present the Fundamental Theorem of Counting, upon which all other counting techniques are based.  We also present the basic ideas behind recognizing the difference in four specific properties of events that determine a specific counting approach.
