In previous lessons, evaluations of point estimators have been based on their mean squared error (MSE) performance.  MSE is a special case of a function called a loss function.  The study of the performance, and the optimality, of estimators evaluated through loss functions, is a branch of decision theory.  An introduction to the terminology and logic of decision theory, as it is applied to point estimation, is presented in this last lesson of the semester.
