Intuition in the Classroom: Debunking Learning Myths

Wednesday, March 27, 11am-12pm
Faculty often rely on their own intuitions and popular wisdom about learning. Unfortunately, much of this “wisdom” is misleading or simply not supported by cognitive science. Does everyone have a distinct learning style? Does practice really make perfect? How much do we remember by hearing versus explaining to someone else? This session will expose the common learning myths and analyze the teaching practices associated (often unconsciously) with these myths. Participants will be equipped to resist the pull of myths while also becoming familiar with cognitive science that forms a stronger foundation for pedagogy.
