Legos and Lasers, Makers and Writers
KJ Mikulencak (Makerspace, Library and Academic Technology Services)
Hannah Mei Smith (English)
Wednesday, October 25
Due to social media offerings like Instagram Reels and TikTok, the current generation of college students has been conditioned to devote their attention in 15-20 second bursts. How can educators expect to hold their attention for an hour-long lecture? How can we convince them to devote adequate time to their assignments when the allure of instant gratification via online content is so strong? In this SET, KJ Mikulencak and Hannah Mei Smith discuss their experience with incorporating hands-on activities into a traditional instructional writing assignment using LEGO Bricks and a laser cutter. They will show how the incorporation of hands-on learning and exciting new technologies improved class attention, enthusiasm, and results. *NOTE: It is strongly recommended that this SET be attended in person, as it includes some hands-on elements. Online participants will not be able to fully enjoy the hands-on experience but are welcome to participate in the presentation portion.*
