In data reduction, there are two key principles that play a role in ensuring the statistics being used are efficient in reducing the data and contain information that isn't misleading: those of sufficiency and completeness.  The property of ancillary gives statistics that play a supporting role in enhancing inference.  When the distribution is an exponential family, a convenient method can be used for finding a complete minimal sufficient statistic.
