Workshop Title: Hands-On Power BI Workshop for Baylor University Libraries/LATS
Workshop Description:
Participants will gain hands-on experience creating interactive
dashboards reading data from shared Excel files on Baylor’s
collaborative Teams/SharePoint environment. We will cover collaborating
using shared Excel files, using Power BI Desktop to create dashboards
connecting directly to these files, creating Power BI services that will
automatically update at specified intervals, and granting permissions
for others to view the published dashboards via the web. In Power BI
Desktop, we will cover connecting to Excel files in Teams/SharePoint,
relating tables, creating visualizations using built-in and custom
visuals and slicers, and a very gentle introduction to DAX, the
expression language used to create custom columns and measures.
What participants are expected to know beforehand: Just be comfortable using Excel and Teams. No prior Power BI experience is expected.
What software is required to participate:
- Windows Users: Microsoft Power BI Desktop, freely available but Windows-only, available here: https://aka.ms/pbiSingleInstaller.
- Mac Users: If you are a Mac user
without the ability to install Windows applications on your computer,
you can send a request to helpdesk@baylor.edu
and request access to Baylor’s Microsoft Azure VDI for NVivo and Power
BI. This will allow you to access Power BI (and also the Windows version
of NVivo) directly through your browser. If you are a Windows user,
please install the software directly on your computer as we have a
limited number of concurrent users that can access the VDI pool at once.
What datasets will be provided for the workshop:
- Library space use data from Occuspace
- Library Instruction statistics from Springshare Insights
Want to just watch?: No problem! In that case no software installation is necessary.
Will this be recorded?: You betcha!
